Car key replacement cost

There is no single price for a car key — it depends on the make, model, year and the type of key your vehicle uses. What we can do is give you a fixed price for your exact vehicle before anyone travels. Send your registration and we will tell you the cost, not a "from" figure that changes on arrival.

Dealer vs key cutting shop vs mobile locksmith

Main dealer

  • + Manufacturer-supplied key
  • + Full dealer records
  • Vehicle usually has to be recovered to the dealership
  • Recovery cost and workshop labour on top of the key
  • Often several days' wait for the key to arrive

High-street key cutting shop

  • + Convenient for simple blade copies
  • + Walk-in, no appointment
  • Often blade cutting only — no immobiliser programming
  • Cannot help if all keys are lost
  • You have to get to the shop, so no good in a lockout

Mobile auto locksmith (us)

  • + We come to the vehicle, wherever it is
  • + Key cut to code and programmed on site
  • + All keys lost handled without recovery
  • + Fixed price confirmed before we travel
  • + 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Price varies by key type — we confirm it on your registration first

Comparison based on how each option normally works. Third-party prices change often — always confirm directly with them.

What affects the price of your key

  • Basic transponder key

A plain blade key with a chip inside. Common on older cars and vans. The cheapest key to replace.

  • Remote / flip key

Blade key with central locking buttons built in. Needs both cutting and remote programming.

  • Laser-cut (sidewinder) key

A thicker key with a wavy channel cut into the blade. Needs a specialist cutting machine.

  • Keyless / proximity smart key

Push-button start vehicles. The most involved to replace, and the most expensive.

Two other things move the price: whether you still have a working key (all keys lost takes longer), and the time of day. Both are included in the fixed price we quote you up front.

Cheapest way to replace a car key

Get a spare cut before you lose the last one. A spare key made while you still have a working key is always cheaper and quicker than an all keys lost job — and it saves the cost of an emergency callout later.
