Land Rover · key programming
Land Rover key programmingmobile, at your vehicle, 24/7
“I have a key that needs coding to the car” — that is the call we take on Land Rovers most days. Programming pairs a key to your vehicle's immobiliser so the car accepts it. A key that is cut but not programmed will turn a lock and do nothing else. We can program keys we supply, and in many cases a key you have already bought — though we cannot guarantee an unknown aftermarket fob until we see it.
How Land Rover keys work
Defender, Discovery and Discovery Sport run proximity keys on recent generations and remote/transponder keys on older ones. Both need programming to the vehicle's immobiliser; only the older bladed keys also need cutting.
The new Defender is a proximity-key vehicle; older Defenders and Freelanders are usually transponder keys that also need the blade cut. Discovery sits either side of that line depending on year.
What this job includes
- Key paired to the immobiliser and tested
- Remote and proximity functions checked
- Keys we supply, and often keys you already have
- Done at the vehicle, 24/7
Land Rover jobs we're called to
- Spare key for a Defender or Discovery used for towing and work
- Lost single key on a Discovery Sport
- All keys lost after a key was left in a field, boat or building site
- Worn or snapped older Freelander/Discovery blade
Land Rover models and years
Most Land Rovers of the last two decades are workable at the roadside. Newer vehicles depend on the key system fitted — send the registration and we will confirm. Key compatibility depends on model, year and key system — send your registration and we will confirm availability and price before anyone travels.
How the visit runs
- 1. Send registration, make, model and year
- 2. We confirm the system and quote
- 3. Technician attends with the programmer
- 4. Key coded, tested and handed over

How long a Land Rover key programming takes
Programming alone is usually a short visit, because there is no key to source and often nothing to cut — it is the electronic half of a key job on its own.
What decides the price
Programming-only is the least expensive visit of the four, since you are not paying for the key itself. If the fob you supply turns out to be incompatible with your Land Rover, we will tell you on inspection rather than charging for a failed attempt.
Land Rover key programming FAQs
- I bought a Land Rover key online — can you program it?
- Often yes, but we will not promise it before seeing it. Aftermarket fobs vary in quality and some are simply the wrong system for the car. Send a photo of the key and your registration and we will give you an honest view first.
- My Land Rover key locks the doors but will not start the car
- That usually means the remote works but the transponder is not paired to the immobiliser — a programming job rather than a new key. It is one of the cheaper outcomes, so it is worth having checked.
- Are newer Land Rovers covered?
- Most Land Rovers of the last two decades are workable at the roadside. Newer vehicles depend on the key system fitted — send the registration and we will confirm.
